Kidney Yarns

This guide offers question prompts to help you build meaningful connections, understand patient journeys, and provide best practice support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with kidney disease.

The questions are based on years of extensive experience from both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with kidney disease and transplantation, as well as nephrologists, nurses, transplant coordinators, and Aboriginal Health Practitioners.

I’d like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we meet today and pay my respects to Elders past and present. I recognise the unique place held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the original Custodians of the lands and waterways across the Australian continent, with histories of continuous connection dating back more than 60,000 years. I acknowledge their enduring cultural practices of caring for Country, and I acknowledge that this always was, and always will be, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land and waters.

Some of these questions may be obvious to you, but from the experiences encountered by many, the following questions are either not asked often enough or are the questions patients want clinicians to be asking.

If we're missing a question or topic you think it critical people consider when working with First Nations kidney consumers, please add it using the box at the bottom of this page.

Use the following drop-down list to find prompts that align with specific areas of care.

"Have you had a chance to discuss the possibility of a kidney transplant?"
"Is there anything about the transplant process that you’re unsure about?"
"Has anyone explained the steps you need to take if you decide to go on the transplant waitlist?"
"Do you have any concerns about getting a transplant that we haven’t talked about?"
"Is there anything I can do to help you feel more informed or comfortable about this option?"
"Have you worked with a Patient Navigator before? If so, how was your experience? If not, can we put you in touch with a program?"
"Would you find it helpful to have a Patient Navigator assist you with appointments, information, and other needs?"
"Do you feel supported in managing your kidney health?"
"How connected do you feel to your community while managing your kidney health? Are there community supports you would like to access?"
"Who are the key people in your life that help you with your healthcare needs?"
